I have never been very good with my hands. I admire those who are.

This has impacted on the kind of work I have been able to do, as it has my friends whose intelligence is wonderfully expressed through using their hands.

Currently many jobs in our country are disappearing for people who can only work with their hands. I am concerned about what will happen to them.  While I can understand governments saying that they won’t prop companies up and that they need to stand alone, the fact is that those companies employ people who depend on them for their incomes.

So what is our societal responsibility to those with manual intelligence who need work?  The parable that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan comes to mind as a biblical basis.

The words of FD Roosevlet, US president (1933-45) also ring true for me

‘“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.”

I think part of being a just and healthy society is that we work hard so that people with all kinds of intelligence can work and provide for their family.  If governments don’t do this, who will?
